Wallace -- Bruce Zick delivers a powerful and captivating punch in Primordial : I’ve been a fan of Zick’s Jack Kirby-inspired but dangerously unique artwork since his run on The Mighty Thor some years ago, and I’ve enjoyed his more recent works immensely. Primordial, the latest in his fantasy canon, offers yet another compelling journey to a fascinating world—this one undersea. The search for a breath of air in the midst of continual dangers will leave you breathless. Zick’s art is once again thrilling, and beautifully colored. While seeing the penciled art reminds me of gazing (and drooling) at Kirby’s pencil pages gleaming with raw dynamism, I wonder if it might be improved by inking the pencils. I haven’t decided yet, but I certainly like what I see as it is. More, please, Mr. Zick! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021 )
• 4.0 out of 5 stars from David Parker -- This is how to write an undersea character! : Great read! Bruce Zick's art is fantastic! The color is not very bright, but of course that's on purpose. The whole story takes place undersea, so of course the colors would be more pale and muted. His character of Neelar the mutant is very likeable. Both Marvel and DC could learn a lot from Bruce Zick on how to tell a story about an undersea character. For one thing, this story is totally self-contained. There are no silly "cross-overs" with other characters who don't belong in the story. How many Aquaman stories have been ruined by forced company-crossovers with Batman or some other character who doesn't fit into the style of story?! The illustration of the giant eel on page 20 alone makes this book worth buying. The story moves along pretty well, but my only complaint is that it ends too abruptly -- you definitely want the story to go on. I really hope Darkhorse tries to get Bruce Zick to do another "Primordial" book. And by the way, I think this story and art-style would be perfect for an animated movie. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from DRM -- A lovely but a little unsatisfying graphic novel : The art is very good much of it obviously inspired by Jack Kirby. The coloring is gorgeous. The story is good but a little disappointing. Set on a water world the undersea inhabitants are dismayed that mutants that need to breathe air keep showing up. One of them sets off teams up with a huge turtle who I guess has gills since it never needs to breathe air on a quest to find the legendary land. Apparently although he needs to breathe air one breath lasts a long time. He proceeds to find other undersea beings, to be hunted by bounty hunters, to run into various monsters and to discover he is a prophesized one who is going to create a new species. At the end he decides to hell with the prophesy and for some reason he never thinks to swim up to the surface. He has to have seen bubbles float upward so why doesn't he think "Hey maybe the air is collecting higher up somewhere" and swim up to see? No he just swims arounds in the deep. One further note the copy I received was damaged on the front cover. The packaging was undamaged so this is how it was put in the package. It wasn't enough to warrant returning it but maybe be prepared. ( Reviewed in Canada on October 13, 2021 )
